Żejtune Wins at 7th European Works in Progress

Alex Camilleri’s sophomore feature film, Żejtune, was among the winners of the 7th edition of European Works in Progress, held in Cologne on October 15 and 16, 2024. Currently in post-production, the film is a co-production between Solari Productions, Pellikola, Noruz Films and One Two Films of Germany.

Żejtune tells the story of Mar, a young woman determined to claim her family inheritance and leave the small island of Malta behind for good. However, an encounter with Nenu, an elderly troubadour, introduces her to the enchanting art of Maltese folk singing, tempting her to rediscover her love for the country she longs to escape.

An 8-minute preview of the film was screened at the event. The jury awarded the production a €5,000 voucher from MMC Studios, remarking “The relationship between generations and cultures left us intrigued to see more of Mar and Nenu.”

Writer/director Alex Camilleri, producer Oliver Mallia, and co-producer Fred Burle attended the event to present the project.

Set for release in 2025, Żejtune is supported by Creative Malta, Arts Council Malta, ZDF/ARTE, the Doha Film Institute, and the Ministry for Gozo.
