Burbank Syndrome Awarded Screen Support Scheme Funding

Pellikola is thrilled to announce that our upcoming production, Burbank Syndrome, has been selected for full funding under the new Screen Support Scheme Production Strand, administered by Arts Council Malta. This marks a significant milestone for the project as it embarks on its production journey.

Directed by the award-winning filmmaker Pia Borg, Burbank Syndrome is a hybrid documentary-fiction film set in 2023 against the backdrop of the Gladiator 2 production in Malta. The film follows 84-year-old Maltese veteran actor and former studio boss Narcissus Calamatta as he boldly pursues his directorial debut—a vampire slayer comedy.

Burbank Syndrome will be Pia Borg’s first feature-length film. The Maltese-Australian director has received widespread acclaim for her previous work. Her most recent short film, Demonic, premiered in the prestigious Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. In 2014, Pia won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival for Abandoned Goods, a short documentary she co-directed with Edward Lawrenson.

We look forward to sharing more updates as this exciting project comes to life!
